Wooden task lamp

image

Beautiful 1980's (although likely imagined in the 1970's) handmade architect's lamp, found at an estate in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. I love how even the nuts and bolts are wood.
Standing ovation to the maker but unfortunately it's not signed.

Bowl, 1947

jcmarsh.slider2

New in the shop, a great little black clay bowl signed JC Marsh, 47. Coincidentally the same year that Miracle on 34th St. came out...

Over the next few weeks we'll be stocking the shop with perfect gifts like this, so keep checking!

Always on the lookout for interesting, hippie, handmade, design-y pottery, this fit the bill on all counts.
It was only after picking it up we saw the name Katzer.

Above, Elaine Katzer on the kick wheel in 1962, from here, which looks like it's going to be an awesome show. And below, slightly more impressive than our bowl is her giant stoneware work "Sea Chanty" (1976), from the book California Design...
In fact, this may be my new favorite thing .

Boro Sweet Boro

hippiehouse

With a little help from us Urban Outfitters has boro'd the Japanese Boro Jean Quilt project from our book and made it into a cool hippie wall hanging. "Boro" is Japanese for rags, and is most often used in reference to the resourcefully mended, endlessly repaired indigo cotton futon covers of the farmers and fishers of Northern Japan. (See much more info here, and here was our primary source of inspiration during the original project). Our quilt version was made from salvaged old jeans.

Although Urban's is a slightly smaller size quilt it would also make a cool dog bed or a kind of tami mat or boro blankie for a kid.

The plum blossom-y peasant print on the back fabric (above) was also designed by us.
The middle photo is the Urban's sample, on top of our larger original, as it came to us to be okayed. The top photo is a spread from our book, taken near Linda's parents' house Long Island, Maine. The old hippie anthropomorphic shack being a "sweet home" ;-)

Valley Guy

Living Treasure of California ceramicist Stan Bitters making a cameo in his friends' Joyce Aiken and Jean Ray Laury's 1977 classic, "The Total Tote Bag Book", which, along with their "Handmade Rugs from Practically Anything", and "Creating Body Coverings", complete the must-have holy trinity of 70's craft books (with Alexandra Jacopetti's "Native Funk & Flash" and Peter Beagle's "American Denim" coming in close behind.

* Google mapping that address adds a healthy dose of 70's California Valley provenance.

The Point

Second hand needlepoints, always found for a dollar or two, and always making us ask "why would anyone get rid of this?" From top: the coolest tennis racquet cover ever, from a church sale. Obviously for a plumber, or a tennis pro with a wandering pipe; a nice colorful glasses case; a so sweet gift from a grandmother featuring an 8-bit sized Jack Russell; an old Union Jack pincushion; floating mushrooms; a funny Gucci purse, from an estate sale in Old Orchard Beach; two blue willow pillows; an old Princetonian eyeglasses case; a pink-and-metallic pillow from 1974; and Harry Nilsson's The Point, memorized by John from when he was a kid and now cued up on the toy turntable in our soon-to-arrive son's room (who needs "hickory-dickory-dock" when you have "Me and my Arrow".)

Textiles

Click to enlarge each of these.

top: From a yard sale last weekend, 6'x5' wool patchwork blanket, backed in wool. The woman told us "a girl made it for my husband back in the 70's". It's in perfect condition- probably taken from the back seat of the Volvo wagon directly into storage. She said she'd take the 4 dollars and buy herself a martini.

Middle: Fantastic 8' Turkish runner from an estate sale. The edges are frayed but they can be trimmed and fringe added back on.

Bottom: From the 30's, an awesome crazy-quilting patchwork of denim and twills, with a few odd-shaped pieces within each square.
