Emil Hermann's Midsummer Night's Wood Nymph

New in our shop

"Despite its condition this is a great painting of a wood nymph dancing around a twilight forest in a sheer, diaphanous cloth. Painted by midwest American artist Emil Hermann (1870-1966). The condition is shabby- it has about 10 chips of paint off the front (although you could almost imagine them as Forest Sprites), one hole, and probably layers of dirt (Antiques Roadshow protocol says I'll leave the cleaning to the experts.) But those flaws considered, it makes for a nice piece of shabby chic decor- the smile on the dancer's face transcends the condition. 

Signed "Emil Hermann 1910" in bottom left corner."

Canadian Vacation by Train, 1940

Some favorite photographic glass slides from an unknown but highly skilled photographer's trip to western Canada in 1940. If you're into railroads, and big, unspoiled landscapes, you could make some pretty amazing prints from these. The lot of 54 of them are in our shop,

The Four Seasons

Linda and I were at a neighborhood yard sale a couple years ago, and though there was nothing at this lady's driveway setup, it did make for a neat photo, especially with the amazing Japanese maple. So I asked, "Do you mind if I take a picture? Your Japanese maple is really beautiful."  The woman was so excited to hear this she said "Oh please do! But wait- let me show you something and also wait til I shut the garage door before you take the picture." Then she proudly came out to show us these portraits of her tree in each of the four seasons, taken from the same spot in her driveway. I thought this was so great. Sometimes the best things at yard sales are things you can't buy. No, I'm kidding. but I love that she loved her tree so much.
